Materials and Methods: Twenty consecutive left-side breast cancer patients who underwent breast-conserving surgery were included to the study. For each patient, two different treatment plans were created for the entire breast. FIF plans and CRT plans were compared for doses in the planning target volume (PTV), the organ at risk (OAR) volume including ipsilateral lung, heart, left ascending coronary artery (LAD) and the contralateral breast, the homogeneity index (HI), and the monitor unit (MU) counts required for the treatment. Paired samples t-test was used for statistical analysis. Results: The FIF technique significantly reduced the maximum dose of the PTV as well as the mean doses of the heart, LAD, ipsilateral lung and the contralateral breast (p values were <0.001 for each). When the OAR volumes irradiated with 2, 5, 10, 20, 30 and 40 Gy were compared, the results were in favor of the FIF technique. The volume receiving <20 Gy of the prescription dose for the ipsilateral lung was significantly decreased using FIF technique (p<0.001). FIF technique allowed us more homogenous dose distribution with lower MUs. Conclusion: The FIF technique provided better dose distribution in the PTV and significantly reduced the doses in the OAR. Considering the lower MUs required for treatment the FIF technique seems to be more advantageous than CRT during whole breast irradiation. Iran. J. Radiat. Res., 2012; 10(3‐4): 131‐138

Dosimetric comparison of conventional and field-in-field techniques in early stage breast cancer radiotherapy

Introduction: Breast conserving surgery followed by adjuvant radiotherapy (RT) of the whole breast is accepted as the treatment of choice in early stage breast cancer. Due to breast irregularities, it is difficult to access homogenous dose distribution with conventional techniques. Currently, it is possible to use varied breast irradiation techniques, such as field- in-field (F...

Dosimetric comparison of 3-dimensional conformal and intensity-modulated radiotherapy techniques for whole breast irradiation in the prone and supine positions

Background: The aim of this study was to compare the differences of the dosimetric parameters between three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3D-CRT) and simultaneous-integrated boost intensity-modulated radiotherapy (SIB-IMRT) techniques in the prone and supine positions for breast irradiation. Materials and Methods: Ten patients underwent a computed tomography simulation in both the prone a...

Comparison of dosimetric radiotherapy of whole left- breast cancer using conventional tangential wedge-based techniques (CTT) and three intensity modulation techniques (IMRT)

Introduction: Whole breast radiotherapy after breast-conserving surgery decrease the risk of local recurrence. this study investigates the dosimetric aspects of intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) compared to conventional tangential wedge-based beams techniques (CTT) of the whole breast in early stages breast cancer patients.   Materials and Methods: Co...

Optimization of tangential fields arrangement in the breast cancer 3D conformal radiation therapy

Introduction: The incidence of breast cancer increases with the rate of 1-2% at the world. Radiation therapy is one of the available choices for breast cancer treatment. The single isocentre half-beam block technique is considered as a standard technique to avoid hot and cold spots within the PTV. The major advantage of half beam technique is that the both contralateral breast...

Dosimetric Study of Tissue Heterogeneity Correction for Breast Conformal Radiotherapy

Introduction: Heterogeneity correction is an important parameter in dose calculation for cancer patients where it may be cause inaccuracy in dose calculation as a result of different densities of patients. This study studied the impact of dose calculation of breast cancer patients with and without heterogeneity correction. Material and Methods: Twenty breast cancer patients were treated with Th...
